Prof Yemi Osinbajo
Future Perspectives, in partnership with its development and policy division, the Africa Centre for Future Perspectives, and in collaboration with Nigeria’s immediate past Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, is undertaking a comprehensive, multi-sectoral evaluation.
The primary objectives of this initiative are to generate robust evidence, enhance public awareness, and inform strategic directions regarding health financing and climate adaptation across select African nations.
Prof. Osinbajo, a committed proponent of climate justice and sustainable growth, will lead this initiative in five West African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone).
The central aim is to advance domestic health financing solutions that reinforce African health systems amidst escalating challenges posed by climate change.
Governments throughout Sub-Saharan Africa face increasing pressure to strengthen health infrastructures as they manage expanding debt obligations and frequent climate-induced shocks. These adversities contribute to worsening food insecurity, a rise in vector-borne diseases, and heightened pressures on already vulnerable health systems.
As the former Vice President has previously remarked, “The impact of climate change will be different across key regions and groups.”
The poor and vulnerable, largely in developing economies, will be first to suffer and worst hit by the effects of climate change… These multiplier effects can be drawn in other sectors, from health to shelter and security.”
This situation highlights the pressing need for coordinated multi-sector responses and innovative strategies for health financing that develop resilience at scale.
Prof. Osinbajo will convene an inaugural high-level consultation in the Federal Republic of Sierra Leone from the March11- 13, 2026, alongside His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio, who also serves as the Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
In addition, he will facilitate deliberations with senior ministers and national leaders whose responsibilities and portfolios are integral to advancing climate-health financing efforts. (NAN)
