Governor Agbu Kefas
Governor Agbu Kefas has established a reconciliation committee to resolve the ongoing dispute between the United Methodist Church of Nigeria and the Global Methodist Church of Nigeria.
The inauguration ceremony took place over the weekend at the Executive Council Chamber of the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.
Speaking, Governor Kefas urged members of the committee to carefully examine the key areas of disagreement between the two Christian bodies and work towards finding enduring solutions to the dispute. He emphasised that peace and religious harmony remain central to the stability and development of Taraba State.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace across the state, noting that he was ready to dedicate his personal resources if necessary to ensure reconciliation and lasting unity between the churches.
Kefas also assured both parties that justice would be served fairly, urging members and leaders of the two denominations to cooperate fully with the committee in the interest of unity and stability.
He further issued a stern warning to individuals or groups issuing threats or attempting to disrupt the peace of the state, urging them to desist immediately or face the full weight of the law.
Responding on behalf of the committee, its chairman, Iroh Aliyuda, thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in the members.
Aliyuda assured that the committee would approach its assignment with diligence and fairness, pledging that members would put in their best efforts to resolve the issues between the two churches.
According to him, the committee will engage stakeholders from both denominations as part of efforts to promote reconciliation, restore unity among members, and strengthen peaceful coexistence within the Christian community in the state. (Guardian)
