The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu
The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged parents to teach their daughters modesty and good values.
She gave the advice in Abuja on Thursday while hosting Muslim and Christian women at an interfaith Iftar and Lent breakfast gathering.
Mrs Tinubu also called on women to mentor young girls, especially those from poor backgrounds, saying they should help shape their future through guidance, support and education.
“I challenge you to have a mentee with you, so that not somebody you’ll have been mentoring all the time, but just pour into the life of a young girl from an indigent background.
“You know, help them, even if it is to give a scholarship, encourage them, and teach them. Teach them good virtue. Teach them how to be good women.”
The First Lady also spoke on dressing, saying parents should guide young girls on decency and self worth.
She said exposing the body should not be seen as beauty, adding that real beauty comes from within.
“Teach them how to dress well. Because we see that our young people, you know, they’ve really taken it, I don’t read social media, so it doesn’t bother me. I will take it again. Teach them how to cover up, and you know, being naked is not beauty.
“You know, we don’t know why they are doing that, but beauty comes from within. You know, and our men, God will also help them and open their eyes. I know social media will go on”, said Mrs Tinubu.
Her comments came amid growing public concern over what some Nigerians describe as indecent dressing among young women.
The issue has also drawn reactions from other public figures in recent times.
Filmmaker Biodun Stephen had earlier advised women not to step out without underwear, saying such habits could leave them exposed in difficult situations.
“I do recall making a video a few years ago advising people to stop going out without wearing panties. You said my mouth smelled, but I didn’t stop because of the insults. After some time, I also made another video warning people to stop going out without wearing bras”, she said. (The Guardian)
