The Caretaker Chairman of Gubio Local Council of Borno State, Alhaji Zanna Modu Gubio, has announced the introduction of free meals for pupils under the Social Welfare Programme (SAWP) of the council, to boost enrolment of pupils in primary schools.
He has also distributed free school uniforms, and teaching materials to the 21 schools that were opened, after the military liberated the town last year. Gubio was among the 20 local councils decimated by Boko Haram insurgents.
Speaking during the commissioning and inspection of schools in Gubio town, the chairman disclosed that the council secretariat complex was rehabilitated at the cost of N85m, adding that apart from the provision of a befitting teaching environment for pupils, office accommodation for council staff, a new general hospital, clinics, classroom blocks were also built by the council, while Gubio was reconnected to the national grid.
“We have also procured and distributed furniture, free uniforms to our students in our renovated schools; and we are going to reward the best performing students, by sponsoring their education up to the tertiary level,” he said. (The Guardian)
