The accident scene
A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has died after she was hit by one of the agency’s operational vehicles during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
The incident occurred during a coordinated drill, and was confirmed on Saturday by NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, in a telephone conversation with TheCable.
The officer’s name had not been officially released as of the time of this report.
Footage circulating on social media shows the moment the accident happened during what appeared to be a show-of-force exercise.
According to the video, the officer was knocked down and run over by a patrol vehicle as it made a turn.
The vehicle later came to a stop, and colleagues and onlookers quickly rushed to lift it and pull her out.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and evacuated her.
Confirming the fatality, Babawale said the corps had begun internal processes in response to the incident.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” he said.
He added that a detailed statement would be issued to clarify the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and outline the steps being taken by the agency. (TRIBUNE)
