A man, Afolabi Oluwaseyi, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command following the discovery of a shallow grave in his rented room in the house where he lived, in which he allegedly buried his wife, Aminat Abeke Sule, without the knowledge of anyone.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Ehinogbe area of Owo Town.
According to the information gathered by Saturday Tribune, the discovery was made by a member of the family owning the old building where the suspect and his family were living, one Elizabeth, when she went on inspection of the house, with a view of the family renovating it.
It was further gathered that the suspect was given accommodation free of charge in order to ward off miscreants who had initially turned the old house to a hemp-smoking place.
On getting to the house, the woman reportedly perceived a foul odour, which led her to examine the room occupied by the suspect.
It was a shock when she noticed a mound of freshly dug earth in the room, causing her to raise an alarm.
The woman had called on Owo Security Network (OSN) members, and when questioned, Oluwaseyi confessed to burying his wife in the room.
However, the suspect denied killing his wife. According to him, “My wife who was pregnant, became ill. At midnight, she told me that her stomach was paining her. She had been saying so for some days, and she had a medication she was given to be taken once everyday.
“In the morning, I tried to wake her up but she did not respond. I was so afraid. It is true I buried her, but I told my family members. My younger sibling who is in Abuja rebuked me for doing that, telling me that I should have informed two or three neighbours. He said I was calling for imprisonment with my action.
“He advised me to exhume my wife’s body and bury her decently in our family home with the knowledge of her family members. I also told my mother and she said I was wrong in burying her in a dishonoured manner, saying that she could have been buried in our family home if there’s no money for cemetery expenses.”
The case was said to have been reported at a police station in the jurisdiction where the incident occurred.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying that the investigation is ongoing. (Saturday Tribune)
