The Police in Abia State have arrested two suspects who specialise in vandalising street light installations within Umunneochi Local Government Area.
According to the Abia State Police Commissioner, Adeleye Oyebade, operatives from Isuochi Division, acting on a tip off, arrested one Ebuka Dike and George Okafor, both of Obinulo Ngodo Isuochi on October 14, 2016.
Oyebade who paraded the suspects at the Bende Road Police headquarters, Umuahia, Thursday, said that Monday Okoro who bought the solar energy batteries for N22, 000 was arrested at Onitsha in Anambra State.
According to the CP, six solar batteries were recovered from the suspects.
Also paraded were Chima Ochiabuto (35), Immaculate Ogbonnaya (25) and Uche Nwaokoro (20) who were accused of defiling a 12 year-old girl at Amuvi Arochukwu.
“The suspects who severally took turns to defile the victim were arrested following alarm raised by the guardian,” the Commissioner of Police said.
While one of the suspects admitted that he had carnal knowledge of the girl and blamed the devil for it, another said he only attempted but did not do it and the third denied committing the offence.
The victim identified as Ijeoma, told newsmen that two of the suspects actually defiled her at different days in their houses. She said they dragged her to their houses when she was on errand in the night.
The Commissioner of Police also told newsmen that a combined team of officers from the 55 Police Mobile Force, Aba, and Eziama Division, acting on intelligence gathered on October 16, 2016 arrested one Victor Eborgu, a student of Caritas University in Enugu state who resides at Egbema street in Ogbor Hill, Aba.
He was arrested at Enitona Hotel Aba and accused of being the leader of a car theft syndicate.
Eborgu was reported to have stolen a Mercedes Benz 230E with registration Number UMA 134 HR from where it was parked at City Global Hotel Annex, Ekenna Street, Aba, on October 9, 2016.
The owner of the vehicle said that when he discovered that his car was missing, he reported the matter to the Police who swung into action and later informed him that his car had been found.
Police said the arrest of Eborgu who confessed to the crime also led to the arrest of one Chidiebere Nnamezie, a blacksmith at Ngwa Road, Aba, who is said to be a specialist in fabricating car keys for the syndicate.
Eborgu said he was introduced into the car theft business by his friend named Kalu four years ago, adding that he has stolen four vehicles since then. He said the buyer of the cars is based in
Bayelsa State.
Oyebade said that a Ghana-based businessman, one Duru Ikechukwu, who was abducted by kidnappers around Umuikakaa junction along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, was now breading the air of freedom having been rescued on October 14, 2016.
“The victim was rescued unhurt from the kidnappers den and reunited with his family and his Toyota Avalon car was recovered,” Oyebade said.
The CP expressed disgust at the rate undergraduates in Abia State, especially Umuahia and environs were getting involved in violent crimes and warned of the dire consequences.
He said the Public Relations Department of the Command was currently going round schools to enlighten both students and managements of various institutions of the dangers of such crimes to the society and those who participate in them, with a view to curbing such a trend.
