Peter Obi, US President Trump
Human rights activist and former All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, has written to former US President Donald J. Trump, calling for international attention to the recent assassination attempt on African Democratic Congress (ADC) 2027 presidential hopeful, Mr. Peter Obi, in Edo State.
In the letter dated February 27, 2026, Ogbonnia, a former member of the Nigerian diaspora in the United States, described the attack on Obi, which occurred on February 24 in Benin City, as a serious threat to the safety of political figures in Nigeria. He said gunmen trailed Obi’s convoy from a political event and opened fire at the residence of former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, missing Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, but causing damage to vehicles and property.
Ogbonnia expressed concern over the apparent security lapses and urged former President Trump to use his influence to advocate for stronger protection of political leaders and adherence to democratic norms in Nigeria.
The activist highlighted a pattern of political intimidation in Nigeria, noting that opposition figures and voters have sometimes faced threats that undermine free political participation. He stressed that ensuring the safety of all candidates is critical for a fair and credible democratic process.
Addressing Trump as “a voice for the millions of Nigerians and Nigerian Americans,” Ogbonnia appealed for international attention to Nigeria’s political climate, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democracy and protecting political leaders from violence.
“The safety of political opposition figures is essential for the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy,” he wrote, calling for measures to prevent further attacks and promote political accountability.
The letter reflects growing concerns among opposition figures and human rights advocates about the security of political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections. (Adapted from a Vanguard report)
