The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill seeking to establish the North-East Development Commission to rebuilt parts of the country’s North-East region, which has been ravaged by the insurgency.
The bill passed the third reading on Thursday after earlier disagreements over funding sources and headquarters.
The Senate approved the allocation of three per cent of Value Added Tax accrual to the Federal Government in the next 10 years for the rebuilding of the North-East through the proposed commission.
It also agreed that the headquarters will be located in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The bill will now be sent to the House of Assembly for concurrence before it will passed to President Muhammadu Buhari for his assent.
The Boko Haram insurgency has raged on in Nigeria’s northeast for about seven years now killing over ten thousand.
However, in the past few months the military has succeeded in beating back the Islamist militant sect and significantly reduced the amount of suicide attacks on innocent civilians in the northeast.
Despite the set-backs, Boko Haram still manages to stage regular suicide bombings in Nigeria and neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon. (TV360 Nigeria)
