Concerned residents and motorists in Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the deteriorating condition of roads in the area.
The appeal was contained in an open letter addressed to President Tinubu on Wednesday and signed by Mr. Michael Nwaohiri, Convener of the ‘Fix Lugbe Roads Campaign.’
Nwaohiri described Lugbe as a major residential and commercial hub in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), housing thousands of civil servants, business owners, students, transporters, and families. He noted that key access roads within the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) estate in Lugbe have deteriorated into “craters” of failed pavements, dangerous potholes, and broken drainage systems.According to the convener, journeys that should typically take 10 to 15 minutes now last nearly an hour due to the poor state of the infrastructure.
He added that vehicles break down daily, transport fares are rising sharply, and emergency responses are frequently delayed.
He further noted that local businesses are suffering significant losses as overall productivity in the area declines.
Nwaohiri listed the most affected routes as 1st Avenue Road: From Timber Shed to the Police Sign Board, Mr. Biggs Road: Linking to the Total filling station, King of Kings Crescent: From IK Stores to El Sultan Mall, Sector F Road: Through the Car Wash axis, FHA Phase II: From Total filling station to AMAC Market and FHA New Site: From the Conoil axis on Airport Road.
“Abuja is the capital of our nation, and Lugbe deserves infrastructure that reflects that status,” Nwaohiri stated. “We are not asking for temporary patchwork; we are asking for durable, properly engineered concrete roads that can serve residents for decades.”
The convener urged the President and relevant FCT authorities to conduct an immediate technical assessment of the affected routes.
He also called on the government to include Lugbe’s priority roads in immediate infrastructure intervention plans and provide a clear timeline for their rehabilitation and reconstruction.
He expressed confidence that under President Tinubu’s leadership, the concerns of ordinary citizens would receive the necessary attention. (Daily Trust)
