Commissioner Mefor addressing the Anambra information officers
By CHIEDU UCHE OKOYE & AMAKA ILOANYA
The Anambra state commissioner for information, Dr. Law Mefor, has advised the Anambra state information officers to get acquainted with the social media in order for them to remain relevant in the state’s ministry of information.
He gave them the advice during the training workshop organized for them, which took place at the Situation Room of the Ministry of Information, Jerome Udorji Civil Service Secretariat, Awka on February 24, 2026.
Mefor stated that those who had not been initiated into the culture of using social media for the dissemination of information would be left behind in our fast changing world.
“The social media functions are overarching and overlapping.
“For example, the barrier between radio and television has been broken, as the radio and television stations have social media handles, which use video and audio to convey messages.
“So if you are not strong on the social media, you will be left behind,” Mefor said.
More so, Mefor urged the information officers to acquire writing and social media skills, which they would deploy to earn money when they retire from service.
“Try to be the best that you can be by equipping yourselves with writing and social media skills.
“Doing that will make you remain relevant when you retire, and you can use your writing and social media skills to earn money outside your civil service duties,” Mefor said.
Earlier, the permanent secretary in the Anambra state ministry of information, Pharm. Obiageli Uchebo, lamented that the Anambra state information officers are still operating at the traditional level of news dissemination.
“We have many information officers, but some of them are not productive.
“And they are still at the traditional level of news reporting.
“That is why we have organized this training workshop to equip the information officers with skills,” Uchebo said.
During the training, Chika Chioma taught the participants script writing and the art of presentation while Chinenye Onu drilled them on the use of apps to edit videos.
Veteran journalist, Joseph Obunse and rising blogger, Uche Igboeli, who are, themselves, information officers, took turns to teach the participants topics, which are apposite to their performance of their duties.
Over seventy state information officers, who work in ministries, departments, agencies, and local government areas in the state, participated in the workshop training.
