Panic and grief have gripped residents of Takum Local Government Council in Taraba State following the death of five persons who reportedly consumed meat allegedly laced with poison.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has also left eight other victims battling for their lives in various medical facilities across the area.
Confirming the development on Wednesday, the Taraba State Police Command said preliminary investigations indicate that the victims may have unknowingly eaten meat contaminated with a toxic substance believed to have been used for rodent control.
In a statement issued by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, the Command disclosed that officers were swiftly deployed to the community upon receipt of the report.
The affected individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were evacuated for necessary procedures.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, with many calling for stricter awareness on the handling and storage of poisonous substances within communities.
The police said a comprehensive investigation is now underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the suspected poisoning and to determine whether foul play was involved.
The force urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious food items, sudden illnesses, or related incidents to security agencies to avert further tragedy.
Reassuring the public, the police vowed to uncover the truth behind the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law. (The Guardian)
