Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has revealed that his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was inspired by his admiration for former presidential candidate Peter Obi. Speaking during a reception at the ADC secretariat in Benin, Akpata said he was motivated to defect in order to add value to the party and align with Obi’s vision for a new Nigeria.
The ceremony saw Akpata welcomed by the State Chairman, Kennedy Odion, alongside prominent figures including former Edo State governors John Odigie-Oyegun and Oserheimen Osunbor, former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, and ADC leaders, marking a high-profile consolidation for the party.
Akpata, who formally received his party card from Odion, explained that Obi’s earlier move to the ADC on December 31, 2025, was pivotal to his choice. “I joined the party to add value and to be part of the change that Obi represents,” he said, expressing gratitude for the warm reception and support from the Obidient Movement.
Obi, addressing the gathering, emphasised a commitment to a new Nigeria that works for all citizens, not just a privileged few. “We must build a nation that moves from consumption to production,” he said, underlining the party’s vision of inclusive growth and equitable development.
Former governors and party leaders praised the growing strength of the ADC coalition, highlighting past successes and expressing confidence in a victory come the 2027 elections. Osunbor, in particular, warned against potential attempts by the ruling party to rig elections, stressing that Nigeria must remain vigilant in defending democracy. (The Sun)
