Activist Omoyele Sowore
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has defended its actions against Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of repeatedly spreading falsehoods and defamatory content”
The statement followed an interim injunction granted by Justice J.O.E. Adeyemi-Ajayi of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Abuja, restraining Sowore and Sahara Reporters from publishing content concerning the IGP, his family, or an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Bukola Kuti, pending the hearing of a defamation suit.
The Injunction specifically bars the defendants from publishing claims alleging that Victor Egbetokun, son of the IGP, received N100 million from Anambra State security votes. The order followed an ex parte motion filed on February 11, 2026, by counsel Ayotunde Ogunleye, SAN, and was issued under Section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution, Order 30 Rule 3 of the FCT High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2025, and the court’s inherent jurisdiction.
The case has been adjourned to April 14, 2026, for further hearing.
The injunction comes amid a controversy surrounding ACP Bukola Kuti, who was reportedly the personal escort and romantic partner of IGP Egbetokun. Critics had alleged favoritism and breaches of promotion protocols following her elevation to ACP, sparking debates about merit and procedural fairness within the NPF.
Reacting to the court ruling, NPF spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said:
On his part, Sowore stated on X (formerly Twitter):“On Thursday, I went straight to the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory after learning that a series of ex parte injunctions had been granted to the Illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force, Kayode Egbetokun, his PSO 2, ‘ACP’ Bukola Kuti, and his son, Victor Egbetokun.
The police said Sowore has repeatedly targeted the person, office, immediate staff, and family members of the Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), as well as the Nigeria Police Force itself.
“This step had to be taken because the defendants, over time, have published a series of defamatory and derogatory claims based on fabricated falsehoods against the person, office, immediate staff, members of the family of the Inspector General of Police, as well as the Nigeria Police Force.”
“Our objective is straightforward: to obtain the official records, review them thoroughly, and ensure that the judicial process does not shield incompetence or protect individuals from lawful scrutiny, regardless of their status. We are still waiting for the court to discharge its duty and provide the requested documents.”
“However, court officials later informed us that the judge’s handwritten notes were difficult to decipher and therefore could not yet be provided.
“Upon arrival, the Court Registrar advised that we formally apply for the Certified True Copies (CTC) of the orders. We immediately complied and also applied for the full records of proceedings. (The Guardian)
