The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Coalition Movement in Cross River State has condemned the Akwa Ibom State Government over the lingering 76 oil wells dispute, describing the situation as unjust and detrimental to the economic growth of Cross River State.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Austine Ibok, the group accused Akwa Ibom State of unfair treatment in the prolonged disagreement with Cross River State over the ownership of the disputed oil wells.

The coalition argued that Cross River, from which Akwa Ibom was created, deserves fairness and equity in matters relating to shared resources.

It stated that the continued loss of the oil wells has negatively affected the state’s economic prospects, particularly in Bakassi and other impacted communities.

The group also criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government for what it described as a failure to provide a sincere political solution to the dispute between the two states, both of which are governed by the same political party.

According to the coalition, the Federal Government has not shown the leadership and neutrality required to resolve the matter amicably.

Despite its criticism of the ruling party, the ADC Coalition commended the governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, for his efforts to recover what it termed the state’s lost economic assets, including the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort and the disputed oil wells.

The group, however, maintained that it would work to ensure the APC is voted out in 2027, urging the governor to align with the ADC ahead of the next general elections. (The Guardian)
