FRSC officials on duty
Angry motorists on Saturday vandalised the office of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ovbiogie Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of a driver and an FRSC marshal.
The irate drivers were said to have vandalised vehicles used by the Commission for rescue operations.
Saturday Tribune gathered that the attack on the FRSC facility in the locality was occasioned by an accident that led to the death of a driver and an official of the FRSC.
It was further gathered that the situation became aggravated when the drivers accused the FRSC officials of insensitivity, as they were alleged to have taken their official, who was injured in the accident, first to the hospital, while the corpse of the driver who was said to have died on the spot, was left unattended to.
Witnesses said the accident affected both the driver and the FRSC marshal.
The witnesses said the FRSC rescue team left the driver and took only their personnel, an action that, the witnesses said, drew the ire of drivers and sympathisers.
It was gathered that the accident caused heavy traffic congestion along the busy Benin-Lagos Road.
Edo FRSC Sector Commander Cyril Matthew, while confirming the incident, said the injured marshal later died at the hospital.
Matthew explained that it was the practice standard for accident victims that were still alive to be rescued first to the hospital before taking the dead to the morgue.
He said the driver died on the spot while the marshall was still breathing as at the time the rescue team arrived the scene of the accident.
According to the Edo FRSC boss, “The team took the injured marshall to the hospital first because he was still breathing and later returned to take the driver who was already dead.
“The people thought the driver was still alive and accused our men of being insensitive. They, then, attacked our men, as I was told.” (Nigerian Tribune)
