File photo of train on the move
Tragedy struck in Aba, Abia State, last week when an unidentified man, said to be in his mid-30s, reportedly fell off a moving train and died.
Eyewitness accounts had it that the train was heading to Port Harcourt from Aba when the incident occurred inside the city.
It was gathered that the deceased, alongside several other passengers, was said to be hanging on top of the moving train, a dangerous practice reported to be common among some commuters who try to avoid paying the appropriate fares.
Sources revealed that the victim, while on top of the moving train, lost his balance and fell off the rooftop of the train, landing on the rail track and dying instantly.
Reports from the city indicated that the victim’s body remained on the rail track along Uratta Road, behind the Aba–Port Harcourt Road, for several hours after the incident without being removed.
A resident of the city, Kalu Okorie, who spoke on the incident, warned those travelling by train not to engage in acts that will endanger their lives, stressing that hanging on the roof of a moving train for whatever reason is dangerous. (The Sun)
