Low fuel costs primarily relieve inflationary pressures, bolster consumer demand, and redefine energy policy priorities, all while negating the perils of continued reliance on uncertain global markets.
Low fuel prices provide immediate and obvious benefits.
Transport costs fall, reducing pressure on food prices and consumer items that rely heavily on road logistics.
In South Africa, the announcement of a second consecutive month of fuel price decreases could underpin some economic relief.
Petrol prices are expected to reduce by approximately 65 cents per litre, while diesel prices will fall by 50 to 57 cents per litre.
The decline was ascribed to the sustained decreasing trend to reduced international product prices, which were supported by increased worldwide stockpiles.
This was despite an increase in crude oil prices over the assessment period.
A stronger National currency (Rand), also had a considerable impact. In January, the rand rose from R16.85 to R16.31 versus the US dollar, reducing import costs and lowering the Basic Fuel Price by 28.52 cents per litre for petrol, 31.62 cents for diesel, and 31.86 cents for illuminating paraffin, per APANews.
Low fuel costs coexist with, and occasionally accelerate, broader energy policy developments.
Kenya offers a contrasting yet comparable example.
While still subject to fuel import prices, the country recently implemented tax breaks for electric vehicle (EV) parts and charging stations to minimize dependence on fossil fuel imports and reduce emissions.
As presently constituted, Kenya's EV market has grown rapidly, with registered electric vehicles increasing from 796 in 2022 to 24,754.
With that said, here are the African countries with the lowest fuel prices in February per data from Global PetrolPrices.
Compared to last month’s list, when the global average fuel price was 1.28 U.S. dollars per liter, as opposed to 1.30 U.S. dollars per liter, fuel prices in Libya and Liberia were the only ones to dip.
While fuel prices for Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tunisia, and Niger increased slightly.
Prices for Angola and Sudan remained the same. (Business Insider Africa)
