Canada has rolled out major updates to its visa and immigration policies, introducing new opportunities for international students, skilled workers and professionals while tightening some existing pathways.

The reforms represent a significant shift in the country’s immigration framework and are expected to make entry easier for qualified applicants.

Below are five key changes you should be aware of:

End of Start-Up Visa Applications

Canada has stopped accepting new permanent residence applications under the Start-Up Visa Programme. However, applicants who already have a valid commitment certificate from a designated organisation can still apply until June 2026. Work permits under the programme are now limited to existing permit holders.

No Canadian Work Experience Requirement

Foreign-trained professionals are no longer required to have prior Canadian work experience to qualify under Ontario’s Employment Standards Act. The policy, which took effect on January 1, 2026, is designed to reduce barriers for internationally trained workers seeking opportunities in Canada.

Faster Entry for Qualified Professionals

Under Ontario’s new “As of Right” framework, professionals can begin working within 10 business days once their credentials are approved by the relevant regulatory body. The policy covers fields such as healthcare, engineering, electrical trades and architecture.

Rural Renewal Stream in Alberta

Foreign workers looking to settle in Alberta can now apply through the Rural Renewal Stream. The programme allows rural communities to endorse candidates with local job offers, with successful applicants eligible for nomination for permanent residence.

Study Permit Changes for Postgraduate Students

International students pursuing master’s or doctoral programmes in public institutions are now exempt from providing a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter when applying for a study permit. The requirement was previously introduced to regulate study permit applications. (Vanguard)
