Two more members of the Shiite movement are feared killed and 10 others injured in a renewed mob attack in Kaduna, North-West Nigeria. Awwal Yaro Maikyau, Special Adviser on Youths to Governor Nasir El-Rufai, was attacked and injured while trying to mediate.
Residents said the clash was ignited when the Shiites regrouped to renovate their destroyed school near Zango Road, Tudun Wada in Kaduna South Local Government Area.
Mallam Bala Zango, a shop owner at Zango Road, said: “The issue is getting out of hand because hundreds of youths are advancing towards Ungwan Muazu to hunt for Shiite members.
“We heard that two persons suspected to be members of the Shiite sect were dead at Tudun Wada.
“It’s very scary because at the end of the day, it’s the innocent people that will fall victim.”
Some witnesses said Awwal Yaro Maikyau was attacked by the Shiites in his attempt to mediate and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
“Awwal Yaro Maikyau, the Governor’s SA on Youths whose house is close to the scene of the incident, was also attacked while trying to mediate between them and the irate youths,” a family member said.
Other sources in Ungwan Muazu said youths from the area have also moved to join others in the “hunt” for the Shiites.
Some members of the Shiite sect who spoke on phone with our reporter said they were attacked when they came “to put our school centre in shape.”
One of them said: “Some thugs came to attack us with weapons, insisting that we must be evicted completely from the place.
“Police arrived the scene and went with some of our members and some community members for settlement.
“As they left, of 10 of our Shiite members were machetted. It was rumoured that two of our member were killed, but we are still making inquiries to confirm.
“This is the danger behind playing politics with religion.”
Samuel Aruwan, Spokesperson to the Governor, when contacted said he is not in town and asked our reporter to contact the police.
The Police Spokesperson, Aliyu Usman, when contacted, said they are monitoring the situation.
“Please, be patient. We are monitoring the situation. We shall get back to you later,” he said.
