Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have died after a swimming pool incident at a hotel in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, during a party organised for newly matriculated students.
The victims were identified as Oludere Opeyemi (22) and Adegbola Blessing (19).
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the tragedy occurred on the evening of January 29, 2026.
According to him, Blessing was first discovered unconscious in the hotel’s swimming pool at about 8:00 p.m.
“He was rescued by the pool manager and given first aid before he regained consciousness and was able to stand. He was later taken home by his friends,” Jimoh said.
However, shortly after, another student, Oludere Opeyemi, was also found unconscious in the pool.
“He was promptly rescued and rushed to the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel,” the police spokesman added.
Jimoh said operatives from the Akungba Divisional Police Station were immediately deployed to the scene that same night to commence investigation into the incident.
He said as part of preliminary inquiries, the hotel manager, Ayomide Badejo, and the pool manager were invited for questioning.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the situation worsened in the early hours of January 30, 2026, when Blessing, who was earlier revived, was reported dead.
“Further developments occurred at about 0700hrs on January 30, 2026, when the first victim, Adegbola Blessing, was reported to have also passed on,” Jimoh said.
He added that the case had been transferred to the Command’s Monitoring Unit for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The PPRO said the remains of the deceased students have been deposited at the morgue of the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, for preservation and autopsy.
He added that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths. (AriseNews TV, but headline reworked)
