: Traders conduct business at Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State
The Nigerian Army has commended traders at Onitsha Main Market for their courageous decision to reopen businesses after years of intimidation by criminal elements.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Division described the action as a bold and patriotic step that signals a collective stand for peace, security, and economic progress in Anambra State and the South-East region.
The statement, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olalekan Ayeni, said the traders’ decision to resume normal commercial activities represents a rejection of threats and coercion by groups seeking to disrupt economic life in the region.
“For years, criminal elements masquerading as freedom fighters have instilled fear and undermined the livelihoods of hardworking citizens. Their actions, aimed at crippling commerce, destabilising communities, and eroding confidence in government institutions, have long been countered by security efforts,” the statement read.
The Division noted that the renewed courage displayed by the traders further validates the gains recorded through ongoing security operations in the region.
“By rejecting intimidation and resuming lawful business activities, they have demonstrated resilience and an unwavering commitment to peace and progress,” it added.
The Army assured traders and residents that Onitsha Main Market and other economic centres across the South-East would continue to receive adequate protection.
It disclosed that security forces remain fully deployed and on high alert, while intelligence-driven operations are ongoing to dismantle remnants of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
“The safety of lives and property of traders and all law-abiding citizens remains our highest priority,” the statement stressed.
The Division urged residents to go about their legitimate activities without fear and to disregard threats from criminal elements.
“The Nigerian Army stands ready at all times to defend the people against those bent on undermining the economic prosperity of the South-East,” it affirmed.
It also warned criminal elements operating in the region to lay down their arms and embrace peace, noting that those who refuse to repent would face the full force of the law.
“There will be no hiding place for enemies of peace,” the Army cautioned.
The 82 Division further reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and called on members of the public to provide credible information that would assist security agencies in their operations.
“Together, we shall defeat all acts of terrorism and sustain lasting peace in the region,” it stated.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division and Commander, Joint Task Force South-East Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, expressed appreciation to the Anambra State Government for its political will and steadfast support.
He noted that the collaboration between the state government and security agencies has been instrumental in restoring normalcy, strengthening security, and creating an enabling environment for commerce and development to thrive in the region. (The Sun)
