The celebrant, Brig-Gen Sani Kukasheka Usman Rtd
By BONIFACE AKARAH
The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has felicitated with Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (Rtd), mni, fnipr, fapra, fnarc, FIOARM, fspsp, describing him as a distinguished patriot, strategic communicator and sentinel of freedom as he marks his birthday today.
In a goodwill message issued from Abuja earlier today and signed by AANI President, Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor, mni, the association praised the retired senior military officer for a life defined by service, integrity and enduring contributions to Nigeria and the Association.
“Today, we celebrate a man whose life exemplifies service, sacrifice, intellect and uncommon commitment to nation-building,” Okafor said of the celebrant, who turned 61 today, Monday, February 2, 2026. “Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman’s career and post-service engagements reflect the highest ideals of leadership and patriotism.”
The AANI President noted that Usman’s tenure as Director of Army Public Relations and Spokesman of the Nigerian Army set a professional benchmark in military communication, civil-military relations and strategic public engagement.
“His outstanding service as Director of Army Public Relations remains a reference point in professional military communication, marked by clarity, credibility and responsible engagement with both the Nigerian public and the international community,” he stated.
Beyond active military service, AANI acknowledged Usman’s continued national relevance through thought leadership, mentoring, scholarly contributions and advocacy within key professional institutions, including the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
“Even out of uniform, his voice has remained one of balance, reason and patriotism, particularly during moments of national challenge,” Okafor said, adding that Usman has consistently demonstrated “a lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s unity, stability and democratic values.”
The Association also highlighted his human qualities, describing him as a bridge-builder and unifier respected across military, professional and civilian circles.
“Calm, principled and approachable, he brings people together, builds consensus and inspires trust — qualities that have amplified his leadership impact wherever he has served,” the AANI President noted.
Reflecting on Usman’s role as immediate past National Publicity Secretary of AANI, Okafor said his tenure strengthened the Association’s public image and strategic relevance.
“He brought professionalism, discipline and strategic direction to AANI’s communication architecture, projecting the Association with dignity, intellectual depth and national relevance,” he said.
AANI further expressed pride in the recent conferment of the ‘Sentinel of Freedom Service Award’ on Usman by the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria, describing it as a fitting recognition of his enduring contributions to national security.
“This rare honour affirms the lasting value of his sacrifices and lifelong commitment to the defence and stability of our nation,” Okafor said. “AANI is profoundly proud of this well-deserved recognition.”
As he marks his birthday, the Association offered prayers for continued good health, renewed strength and greater opportunities for service to humanity and the nation.
“We celebrate your courage, humility and devotion to AANI and Nigeria,” Okafor concluded. “May Almighty God grant you many more impactful years in service to humanity.”
