By BONIFACE AKARAH
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti following his posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy of America, describing the legendary musician as a fearless voice whose influence transcended music and reshaped global culture.
In a State House statement signed by the President, Tinubu said the world of music had honoured “a giant,” stressing that Fela’s life and work represented courage, resistance, and an uncompromising demand for justice.
“The world of music has honoured a giant: Fela Anikulapo Kuti,” the President said.
Tinubu described Fela as more than an entertainer, noting that his music was deeply rooted in social philosophy and political consciousness. According to him, “Fela was more than a musician. He was a fearless voice of the people, a philosopher of freedom, and a revolutionary force whose music confronted injustice and reshaped global sound.”
The President said Fela’s courage and conviction defined a generation and continue to inspire artists and activists around the world. “His courage, creativity, and conviction defined a generation and continue to inspire the world,” Tinubu stated.
Drawing from Yoruba cultural philosophy, Tinubu said the Afrobeat pioneer had attained immortality through his enduring legacy. “In Yoruba mythology, he has transcended to a higher plane as an Orisa. He is now eternal,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that Fela’s posthumous recognition by the Recording Academy marked a historic milestone, as he became the first African to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. According to the President, “The award is an affirmation of his enduring global influence and the foundational role he has played in the evolution and impact of Africa on modern music.”
He further emphasized that Fela’s imprint on global sound remains unmistakable, particularly in contemporary Nigerian music. “He defined Afrobeat, and you can hear and see his influence in generations of Nigerian musicians and in Afrobeats and beyond,” Tinubu said.
The President concluded the tribute with a powerful affirmation of Fela’s lasting relevance, declaring simply: “Fela lives.”
