Afenifere factional leaders Oladipo Olaitan
A pan-Nigerian socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has called on the federal government to urgently address the country’s economic, security, and other challenges, warning that the country will continue to deteriorate. if these challenges are not nipped in the bud.
This was contained in a press statement signed by Afenifere leaders, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and the National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, at their monthly general meeting held in Ilesha, Osun State, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
The group expressed alarm over recent reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Bank indicating that Nigeria’s poverty rate could rise to 62% in 2026 from 38% in 2023.
Afenifere criticised the unresolved 2025 Tax Reform, insisting it should be reintroduced to the National Assembly, as it could further impoverish citizens. They pointed out that the government’s claims about the tax reform are misleading, as the IMF and World Bank calculate the poverty line at ₦4,500 per day.
Afenifere also welcomed recent U.S.-Nigeria joint security operations to combat terrorism and expressed concern over past political interference that hampered similar efforts during President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure.
The body emphasised the need for international collaboration to prevent Nigeria from becoming a hub for terrorism and reiterated their confidence in the Nigerian Armed Forces to defend the nation.
Afenifere also highlighted that permissive policies by the Federal Government and certain northern state governments, particularly during the Buhari administration, have worsened Nigeria’s security situation. Citizens feel unsafe, and the military faces increasing attacks from armed criminals who are sheltered by those in power. The group reiterated its call for restructuring the Nigerian federation, asserting that true federalism is essential for effective governance.
They emphasised the need for state police to enhance national security, arguing that local law enforcement could better manage the movement of terrorist groups.
Afenifere criticised the National Assembly for its inadequate response to the state police issue and condemned calls for negotiations with terrorist groups made by some prominent figures, deeming such actions treasonous. They stressed the importance of maintaining the state’s monopoly on force and rejected any negotiations with non-state actors from a position of weakness.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, Afenifere warned against disruptive political activities that create tension and urged political actors to prioritise the people’s interests. They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure fairness, both in practice and perception.
In attendance at the meeting were Barrister Olusola Ebiseni, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Chief Pekun Awobona, Prince Supo Sonibare, Mr. Olutola Mobolurin, Dr. Gbola Adetunji, Pastor Olajuyinu, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Falade, Prince Elias Matiminu, Arc. Omigbodun, Hon. Lucia Alake, among others. (The Guardian)
