European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced Thursday that the body is ready to reassess and continue work on the EU-US trade deal after US President Donald Trump announced a framework for a future agreement on Greenland and backed off from his tariff threat against several European nations.

"The European Parliament will continue to assess the EU-US trade deal and keep building bridges with Congress. Because a strong, strategic, and fair partnership - based on dialogue and respect - is in everybody’s interest," Metsola wrote on the US social media company X’s platform.

Stressing that "cooler heads have prevailed," Metsola recounted that their position on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland has not budged.

"This week made one thing urgent: the need for a stronger and more autonomous Europe," she added.

The announcement came after the EU put work on its trade agreement with the US on hold until further notice Wednesday.

Later that day, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump announced that a framework for a future deal involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region had been established and also backed off from threats to impose tariffs on several European countries following a dispute over his pursuit of Greenland.

Trump has sought to acquire mineral-rich Greenland, citing national security and increasing Russian and Chinese influence. His bid, however, drew opposition from European countries, against whom he threatened to impose tariffs. (AA)
