Gov Fubara of Rivers State
By BONIFACE AKARAH
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has intervened in the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, calling for restraint and mutual forbearance while announcing the constitution of a high-level reconciliation committee chaired by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN).
In a statement issued on Friday and jointly signed by King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Co-Chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees; Obong Victor Attah, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Co-Chairman of the Board; and Ambassador Godknows Boladei Igali, National Chairman, South-South apex socio-political body, said it was gravely concerned by recent political developments in the state, which have culminated in the Rivers State House of Assembly initiating impeachment proceedings against the Governor and Deputy Governor.
Describing the situation as deeply disturbing, PANDEF warned that continued escalation could lead to a breakdown of law and order, noting the strategic importance of Rivers State to the Niger Delta region and Nigeria’s broader political and economic stability.
“This is a deeply disturbing situation that demands urgent attention in order to forestall further escalation and breakdown of law and order,” PANDEF stated.
The group called on all parties involved in the crisis to embrace dialogue and peace, urging political actors to place the welfare of Rivers State residents and the broader interests of the Niger Delta above partisan considerations.
“PANDEF calls on all parties involved in the resurgent political imbroglio to sheathe the sword and embrace peace, guided by the principles of give-and-take, dialogue, tolerance, and political equanimity,” the statement said.
PANDEF also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), elders of Rivers State, and other stakeholders for their efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the state.
In line with its peace-building role in the Niger Delta, PANDEF announced the establishment of a reconciliation committee comprising senior and widely respected figures, with Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) as Chairman and Senator Obende Domingo as Vice Chairman. Other members include Rt. Hon. Essien Nduese, Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, Chief Mike Ejiofor (rtd), and Mrs. Nella Rabana-Andem (SAN), while Prince Godwin Okotie will serve as Secretary.
PANDEF urged all parties to cooperate fully with the committee, stressing that its objective is to achieve a peaceful, fair, and sustainable resolution through a dispassionate and inclusive process.
