Protesting Ekpoma residents
By NELSON DAFE
There are serious protests going on in Edo State, particularly in Ekpoma. Residents and students are protesting against rampant killings, robbery, kidnapping, and daily violence.
The poor security situation has hit the town that houses the Edo state university so hard that students can’t attend school and residents have continued to live in fear. Angered by what they see as the failure of the state, local government and the university management’s inability to address the security problems, residents trooped out on Saturday morning and have brought the town to a standstill with burning of tyres, blocking of vehicular traffic and singing of protest songs.
Many protesters were seen defacing a campaign poster that carried the photos of President Bola Tinubu and the Edo state governor Monday Okpebholo. Many chanted derogatory songs about both leaders.
The king of Ekpoma Is said to have been dragged out of his palace by the protest.
Soldiers are said to have been drafted to ensure law and order, but reports reaching this reporter says that soldiers have been firing at protesters.
