Collage pictures of Obi, Tinubu, Trump and Kwankwaso
Powerful political leaders within and around the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are intensifying high-level consultations over a potential Peter Obi–Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket to challenge the incumbent APC administration.
Multiple sources familiar with these strategic talks disclose that the emerging permutation is being driven by a blend of domestic political calculations and perceived interests from influential international circles. This includes a shifting diplomatic climate in the United States, where President Donald Trump has intensified rhetoric alleging “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
While credible local sources, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna, have debunked claims of a religious genocide as inaccurate and harmful, the antagonism from the American government toward the Tinubu administration remains unabated.
The ‘International Interest’ Factor
Insiders suggest that ADC strategists believe key power blocs in the U.S. may favor a Christian presidential candidate in Nigeria’s next election cycle. This shift is reportedly influenced by the global posture of U.S. President Donald Trump and his conservative allies, who have signaled a desire to recalibrate partnerships following claims of Christian persecution.
The Trump administration’s recent actions have underscored this tension, including:
* Nigeria was redesignated as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act.
* Targeted visa restrictions were imposed on Nigerian individuals linked to alleged anti-Christian violence.
* President Trump has repeatedly threatened “guns-a-blazing” military intervention and airstrikes against militants following attacks in areas like the Sokoto Caliphate.
“In the worst-case scenario, what the American lobbyists may tolerate is a Muslim–Christian ticket, but certainly not another Muslim–Muslim combination,” a source involved in the discussions told POLITICS DIGEST on the condition of anonymity.
The Obasanjo Connection
POLITICS DIGEST has further gathered that a primary mobilizer behind the project is former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The elder statesman is reportedly engaging stakeholders across party lines and civil society to build a consensus around the alliance.
“Obasanjo believes the country needs a broad-based, balanced ticket to stabilize Nigeria and reset its democratic trajectory,” another source disclosed.
The proposed ticket leverages the unique strengths of both figures:
* Peter Obi: The former Anambra Governor and 2023 Labour Party candidate recently joined the ADC following extensive consultations. Proponents see him as fitting the narrative for a balanced presidency.
* Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso: The leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano Governor is regarded as a “Northern Bridge” capable of mobilizing support across the North-West and North-Central zones.
ADC as the New Opposition Hub
While the ADC leadership has not yet adopted an official position, the party is rapidly becoming a convergence point for opposition forces dissatisfied with both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the fractured Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Insiders confirm that while Atiku Abubakar remains in the race, the coming months will be critical in determining if the Obi–Kwankwaso option crystallizes into a formal challenge. Efforts to reach spokespersons for Obi and Kwankwaso were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. (POLITICS DIGEST, but headline rejigged)
