Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has updated its travel frameworks to clarify the specific entry documentation international visitors need based on their nationality and mode of transport.

The new guidelines divide global travelers into distinct categories, explicitly outlining who can enter the country visa-free, who needs electronic clearance, and who must obtain a traditional visa.

Under the regulations, a small group of individuals can cross Canadian borders without a traditional visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

This selective exemption applies to United States citizens, lawful U.S. permanent residents holding a valid green card, and French citizens who reside in and fly directly from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Diplomatic passport holders and commercial transit flight crews meeting specific operational criteria are also exempt from both requirements.

A broader registry of nations allows citizens to bypass traditional embassy visas, provided they travel by air and secure an online eTA beforehand.
