The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has shut down an abattoir located at Fillin-Ball community of Jos North Local Government Area of state.
The agency described the abattoir as illegal and unhygienic, capable of causing harm to the public.
Mr. Samuel Nathaniel, Director General of the agency, gave the order during an inspection of the abattoir on Tuesday.
He said, “The inspection revealed that the abattoir lacks basic infrastructure, including clean water, proper waste disposal systems, and adequate ventilation.
“Poor waste management practices were also found to be contaminating surface and groundwater quality.
“PEPSA is committed to protecting the health and well-being of the people of Plateau State.
“The operation of illegal abattoirs will not be tolerated, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that all abattoirs in the state comply with the required standards, said Mr. Nathaniel.”
The agency urged the public to support its efforts in ensuring that meat sold in the state is safe for consumption.
It added, “PEPSA is committed to working with all stakeholders to address the issue of unhygienic abattoir practices and promote a healthy environment for all.”
Our correspondent reports that the inspection of the abattoir followed several complaints by members of the community regarding how the operators at the abattoir burn tires to singe animal hides and use dirty water to wash meat. (Daily Trust)
