Gridlock on Lokoja-Abuja road
Motorists travelling along the Lokoja-Abuja road have been stranded as a result of gridlock in the last 24 hours.
Lokoja is one of the major routes for motorists travelling from the northern part of the country to the south and south-south.
Travellers have been left stranded as most of them had to take bikes from one end to the other end of the road to find their way through the gridlock.
Yuletide: Kogi govt takes proactive measures to avert gridlock on Lokoja-Abuja Road
According to some passengers, they paid between N5,000 to N6,000 for a commercial motorcycle from Koton-Karfi to Lokoja before taking another vehicle to their various destinations.
The congestion, stretching up to five miles, was triggered by two fallen trucks near Koton Karfe, paralysing one of Nigeria’s busiest travel corridors during the peak festive season.
Some motorists reported being trapped for over 12 hours, barely days before Christmas.
The gridlock has persisted for three days, with no immediate resolution in sight. One driver reported being on the road since 7 a.m. with his family, still stuck at 8 p.m.
The blockage has forced some commuters onto hazardous, dusty alternative routes
The state stated measures were designed to ensure “safe and seamless travel.”
Despite preparations, the fallen trucks have caused widespread disruption and delays.
Security operatives and FRSC personnel have been deployed to manage the situation.
The Kogi State Government had earlier launched interventions to prevent festive traffic.
As at the time of filling this report no sign of redemption as the traffic continues to pile up. (Sunday Tribune)
