The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) regarding what they claim are attempts by the state government to misconstrue a recent Supreme Court judgment.

The court ruling addressed the issue of local government allocations, which was ultimately struck out.

A statement issued on Saturday by APC state chairman Tajudeen Lawal stressed that political leaders, including Governor Ademola Adeleke and other prominent figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have been misinforming the public about the Supreme Court’s ruling initiated by the state attorney-general against the attorney-general of the federation.

“It is crucial to inform the IGP and the NSA that the PDP leadership, in collaboration with the state government, has formulated plans to attack our party members across local government areas,” Lawal asserted. He detailed a recent incident in which five APC members from Otan-Aiyegbaju in Boluwaduro Local Government were attacked and seriously injured by suspected PDP thugs shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision.

Lawal expressed concern over the state commissioner for information, a lawyer, stating that he was actively misrepresenting the judgment during a radio programme aired in Osogbo.

He emphasised the key points of the Supreme Court’s ruling delivered on 5 December 2025, in the case Attorney-General of Osun State v. Attorney-General of the Federation (suit number SC/CV/379/2025), which held that local government statutory allocations should be paid directly to local councils.

Lawal noted that the court held that each tier of government—federal, state, and local—operates independently and is entirely autonomous.

“Local governments possess exclusive rights over their funds without interference from state or federal authorities.

The attorney-general of Osun State lacked the standing to bring the case, meaning the Supreme Court had no jurisdiction, as there was no dispute between the federal and state governments.

Local governments are recognised as legal entities capable of suing and being sued, thus the appropriate venue for such matters is the Federal High Court, not the Supreme Court,” Lawal said.

The statement questioned how one could claim victory when a case is deemed incompetent by a court. “How can a person’s case be declared incompetent and yet they claim victory? Such a claim is not only absurd but also shows contempt for the court,” Lawal stated.

The APC called on Governor Adeleke to refrain from actions that could disrupt public peace in the state. They encouraged their members to uphold the principles of the rule of law, which they believe will contribute to restoring integrity within local government administration.

The APC accused Adeleke and his political allies of engaging in tactics to provide false hope to their supporters amid rising tensions within their ranks, as they anticipate political turmoil in the near future. (The Sun)
