Confusion surrounds Adeleke’s move to Accord Party

Gov Adeleke of Osun State

The recent resignation of Governor Ademola Adeleke from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sparked confusion among party leadership in Osun State and among his supporters, as many are reportedly hesitant to follow him to his new party.

The future of the PDP is now uncertain following this development, with party leaders yet to decide how to respond to Adeleke’s resignation.

Adeleke resigned just a day before the PDP’s governorship primary and has reached an agreement with the Accord Party to run as their candidate in the 2026 election.

A reliable source from the Accord Party confirmed that party leaders have agreed to give Adeleke the governorship ticket, stating, “Everything has been sealed unless he changes his mind. I may not be authoritative about the date of his official announcement, but it would be done on or before December 10.”

However, concerns persist that some of Adeleke’s allies may not follow him to the Accord Party. Speculation has emerged that his deputy, Kola Adewusi, may be aligning himself with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In September, the PDP leadership in the Ife Federal Constituency passed a vote of no confidence on Adewusi, former national secretary of the party Prof Wale Oladipo, and PDP Chairman of Ife East Local Government, Hon Olasunkanmi Makinde. The communiqué, dated 1 September 2025, accused these leaders of associating with Hon Taofeek Ajilesoro, who defected to the APC.

Speaking to our correspondent on Wednesday, the deputy governor’s spokesperson, Olagoke Awoyemi, dismissed rumours regarding Adewusi’s potential party switch.

He said, “The question of where the deputy governor is going does not arise because the governor has not announced the party he is going to.”

Awoyemi declined to comment on whether Adewusi remains in the PDP, urging inquiries to be referred to the governor’s spokesperson.

“The governor has not actually announced that he is joining any party, so the question of the deputy governor going with him does not arise. He is the most loyal deputy governor. They have been like Siamese twins,” Awoyemi added.

Meanwhile, Adebayo Adeleke, a chieftain of the APC and former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed that some individuals are considering defecting to the APC. He said, “People from different camps are coming to join APC. Our door is open. We are going to take them.” (The Sun)
