What a memorable day one it was for hosts Nigeria at the ongoing second Airtel Rising Stars Championship holding in Lagos!
Following in the footsteps of the girls, who beat hard-fighting Kenya by a lone goal in the competition’s opening game, the boys also snatched the full three points at stake against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the opener of the male category.
Nigeria went into the driver’s seat from 22 minutes when Yakubu Gambo fired home the first goal to spark celebrations at the Agege Stadium, with Gbenga Folami completing the rout in the 60th minute.
An elated Joseph Egbu, who coaches both the male and female teams, expressed joy at the result of the two matches, saying Nigeria has chances of winning the championship.
The matches were watched by soccer fans and dignitaries such as Nigeria Football Federation Vice Chairman Mike Umeh; Chair of Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Adamu Gumba, and Airtel Nigeria officials led by and CEO/MD, Airtel Nigeria, Segun Ogunsanya.
Sixteen boys’ teams are drawn in four groups and 12 girls’ teams in three groups of four teams each in the week-long championship.
