Governor Otu in a meeting with Council Chairmen
Governor Bassey Otu has taken decisive steps to strengthen public safety in Cross River State by convening a strategic meeting with the chairmen of all 18 Local Government Councils.
Held at the State Executive Council Chamber in Calabar, the meeting focused primarily on security as the top priority of the administration as the year comes to a close.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Otu emphasised that protecting every local government area remains the government’s foremost duty. He stressed that constant vigilance and proactive measures are essential amid evolving security challenges.
“The foremost agenda of this meeting is the security of our local government councils,” the governor asserted.
He highlighted that the session was deliberately focused on addressing critical security concerns alongside ensuring the government’s presence is felt in every ward, including rural areas. He added self-assessment as a key point for evaluating adherence to the People-First government principles.
Governor Otu made clear that discussions would be limited to matters directly related to security and citizens’ welfare, reflecting the administration’s seriousness in these areas.
Following the meeting, Hon. Yibala Inyang, Chairman of the Forum of Local Government Chairmen, told reporters the governor’s emphasis on security underscores his dedication to protecting lives and restoring peace in the state.
“The meeting was centred on the welfare and security of our people,” Inyang said. Praising Governor Out as a “concerned and caring leader,” he confirmed the state’s commitment to eliminating remaining security threats.
Although details of the planned security initiatives were withheld for safety reasons, Inyang assured that agreed-upon measures would promptly be implemented throughout all local governments.
He added that Governor Otut’s ongoing collaboration with local leaders demonstrates the administration’s commitment to responding to the security and welfare needs of the people.
In a related development, Governor Out has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, earlier scheduled for 22 November, citing the prevailing national security situation.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, the cancellation will allow the state to better prepare and support the event going forward.
While acknowledging the inconvenience the decision may cause organisers and participants, the governor assured that future editions will be packaged to spotlight Cross River State and transform the marathon into a major national attraction. (Nigerian Tribune)
