Suspected Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) members have attacked a police formation in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing one officer.

Sources revealed that the insurgents also set ablaze two patrol vehicles and carted away one during the operation that lasted 45 minutes.

It was gathered that the insurgents stormed the police formation around 1:30am on Wednesday, on foot and opened fire indiscriminately.

“In what appeared like a silent operation, the insurgents killed one police officer, opened the cells, burned two patrol vehicles, and took away one patrol vehicle,” a security source revealed.

He added that intelligence reports indicated that the ISWAP elements were assembling in some communities in the neighboring Yunusari Local Government Area.

“Credible reports said they are assembling in Sukdu, Buhari, Mattati, and Bulabulin,” he said.

When contacted, spokesman of Yobe State Police command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident, saying the assailants attacked the police division possibly to take away the vehicles.

“But, we are still investigating the matter,” he said.

There has been resurgence of attacks across the country, forcing President Bola Tinubu to postpone his overseas trips.

Last week, terrorists killed some soldiers, members of Civilian Joint Task Force and a Brigadier-General.

On Monday, bandits invaded Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, Danko Wasagu area of Kebbi State, killing one official and abducting 25 students.

Two days after, gunmen broke into a church in Kwara State, killing some worshippers and abducting 30 persons.

Reacting to the incidents, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information, said President Bola Tinubu had placed the country’s security architecture on its “highest alert”.

Idris spoke in Abuja on Wednesday while addressing a press conference on the recent spate of terrorist attacks. (Daily Trust)
