Catholic Church loses priest in Taraba

The late Fr Nicholas Kyukyundu

The Catholic Diocese of Wukari in Taraba State on Saturday, officially announced the death of one of its senior priests, Rev. Fr Nicholas Kyukyundu, who passed away after a prolonged illness.

This was contained in a statement released by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr Simon Akuraga, in Wukari on Saturday morning and shared with journalists.

According to the statement, the late Fr Kyukyundu, who until his death was the Parish Priest of St John the Apostle Parish, Geraga, died on the afternoon of Monday, 11 November 2025, at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari, at the age of 66 years.

The statement noted that the late cleric was born on 6 January 1959 and was ordained a Catholic priest on 29 June 1991.

“It is with deep sorrow and yet with complete acceptance of God’s will that we announce the demise of Rev. Fr Nicholas Kyukyundu of the Catholic Diocese of Wukari,” the statement read in part.

The Diocese said burial arrangements had been scheduled to hold at St Mary’s Cathedral, Wukari, with a wake on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, at 5:00 p.m., and a funeral Mass on Thursday, 20 November 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

The statement described the late priest as a devoted servant of God who served with humility and dedication throughout his priestly life.

“He touched many lives with his faith, compassion, and pastoral care. His memory will remain evergreen in the hearts of the faithful,” the statement added.

Members of the Catholic community across Taraba State have since been sending tributes and condolences to the Diocese and the late priest’s parishioners, describing him as a “true shepherd” and “a man of peace.” (Nigerian Tribune)
