AAC rejects Anambra election results, alleges malpractices

Chioma Ifemeludike, AAC candidate in the just-concluded Anambra guber election

The African Action Congress (AAC) has rejected the conduct and the declared results of Saturday, November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship over alleged malpractices and electoral breaches, calling for a comprehensive, transparent investigation by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, Chioma Ifemeludike, had also criticised the conduct of the poll, alleging that there was widespread vote buying.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Campaign Publicity Secretary, AAC, Chimezie Nwokeanochie, said observations, as well as credible reports received from party agents and independent monitors across the state, indicated that the process was marred by widespread irregularities, vote buying and violations of established electoral procedures.

Nwokeanochie, therefore, called on INEC and other relevant authorities to address these serious concerns and uphold the sanctity of the electoral process.

The statement read in part, “The African Action Congress wishes to express its profound dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the Anambra State governorship election held on November 8, 2025.

“Our observations, as well as credible reports received from party agents and independent monitors across the state, indicate that the process was marred by widespread irregularities and violations of established electoral procedures. These include breaches that compromise the secrecy of the ballot and undermine the integrity of the vote.

“The AAC firmly maintains that elections must be transparent, credible, and reflective of the genuine will of the people. The anomalies witnessed during this exercise fall short of these democratic standards and have, regrettably, eroded public confidence in the process.

“Accordingly, the African Action Congress rejects the declared results of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State. We call for a comprehensive, transparent investigation by the Independent National Electoral Commission and other relevant authorities to address these serious concerns and uphold the sanctity of the electoral process.

“The AAC remains committed to the advancement of democracy, justice, and good governance in Nigeria. We will continue to pursue all lawful and democratic means to ensure that the voice of the people of Anambra State is heard and respected.”

Recall that the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer, Prof. Edoba Omoregie.

Soludo, having polled a total of 422,664 votes, defeated his closest rival and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, who polled 99,445, while the candidate of the Young Progressives Party, Sir Paul Chukwuma, polled 37,753 to come third.

According to INEC, 16 candidates from 16 political parties participated in the just-concluded election.

The state has a total of 2,788,864 registered voters, and 598,229 were accredited for the election, while a total of 595,298 votes were cast. A total of 11,244 votes were rejected across the 21 local government areas in the state.

From the results announced, the candidate of the APGA candidate, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, won in all the 21 local government areas in a landslide. (The PUNCH)
