The uncovering of a plot to bomb the Edo State Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and kidnap some of the candidates led to the last-minute postponement of the state’s governorship election, authoritative security sources have revealed toNews Express.
The election was slated to hold last Saturday, September 10, but was postponed to Wednesday, September 28.
Though security advice was forced INEC to make the shift, the actual nature of the potential threat was not made public. The actual reason, according to a security source who confide inNews Express, was the uncovering of a plan to kidnap candidates from different political parties on the day of the election, so as to disrupt the electoral process and cause chaos in the state.
The source further revealed that security officials discovered that bombs were planted in the INEC Office in the state capital, Benin City.
He said: “The Director of DSS got to know about this very late. And immediately he knew, he had to change his opinion about the conduct of the election.”
News Expressreports that INEC had initially ignored the joint security advice by the Nigeria Police Force and DSS (Directorate of State Security) not to proceed with the ballot but finally surrendered on Thursday, apparently after being showed evidence of the serious security threat that informed the advice.
