Shiites launch mass protest in Kaduna over prolonged detention of El-Zakzaky, wife and other members

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Saturday embarked on a mass protest in Kaduna State over the continued detention of their leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, his wife and other members of the movement.

The group, comprising of women, youths and children, gathered at the popular Leventis roundabout in the state capital, demanding for the unconditional release of their leader and other members.
Chanting songs and blocking major roads, the Shiites allayed fear that the health condition of Zakzaky is deteriorating due to gunshot wounds he sustained.
They vow never to rest until their leader and others are freed.
The protest, which has become a regular activity among members of the Islamic group in Kaduna and other states in the north, led to serious traffic gridlock along Ahmadu Bello Way, and other surrounding streets with motorists diverting to other routes.
The Shiite members, who were accompanied by the police to avoid any clash and breach of law, also observed their prayers at the venue.
El-Zakzaky, his wife and several members of the movement have been detained since December 2015 when they clashed with the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State. (Channels TV)
