Buhari to address UN Assembly over recovery of looted funds

President Muhammadu Buhari will address the 71st regular session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York, a Nigerian minister has confirmed.

The event will take place from September 13-20, 2016.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja, where he shared some of the President’s itinerary for the trip.

Onyeama explained that the President would use the opportunity to build on his excellent relationship with other world leaders and demand the recovery of illicit and looted funds.

The Minister said the Nigerian Government would also canvass for the election of an Afro-centric UN Secretary-General, who would be pro-developing countries.

The President will also discuss Peace and Security, Governance and Anti-corruption fight.

According to the Minister, President Buhari will use the opportunity to brief the world and put the records straight on Nigeria’s position concerning the promotion of human rights, also stating that, “we shall prove that Nigeria has an independent judicial system and there are no interferences in the adjudication of justice.”

Onyeama said it was absolutely important that Nigeria engaged in multilateral relations, noting that it had candidates for positions in International Civil Aviation Authority and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Minister also noted that the repatriation of Nigeria’s funds from other foreign countries is being stalled by the Administrative and Legal issues.

Since assuming office, President Buhari has vowed to recover funds stolen by government officials from the past administration. (TV360 Nigeria)
