EPL: Why Man United has not sacked Amorim – Carragher

Ruben Amorim, Manchesters United manager

Jamie Carragher reckons Ruben Amorim's GOOD LOOKS have stopped him from getting the sack by Manchester United.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag last November and United ended in 15th - their worst Premier League finish.

It sits ninth in the table currently after three games, with their only win coming due to a last-minute penalty to beat Burnley 3-2.

Concerns were also raised after League Two Grimsby knocked United out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

It again leaves Amorim's future in question but the 40-year-old continues to put on a defiant front in the eye of the storm.

And it is his composure in front of the camera which has helped keep him in the job - Liverpool legend Carragher believes.

Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, said: “There is now a big clamour to get Jose Mourinho back in English football and the reason is because he’s box office, he comes out with stuff, but he was a winner.

"We always remember Brian Clough - when I was a kid and he was speaking you’d listen because he was a winner.

“The problem with Ruben Amorim is that he’s great in the press conferences but because he’s not winning, people are thinking, ‘Oh, shut up. Stop speaking.’

"But if he was winning, we’d all be thinking he’s a great character and personality.

“If he wasn’t so charismatic in the press conference, and wasn’t such a good-looking man, he might have lost his job a lot earlier.

"When you look at the results, they are horrendous.”

Amorim has been outspoken about his struggling side - dubbing them "the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United" in January.

After the Grimsby horror show, Amorim said: "Sometimes I hate my players and sometimes I love my players."

And United great, Paul Scholes, said: “I quite like Ruben Amorim. He is very honest and can be too honest.

"He is saying what every manager probably thinks at some point, but I don’t think you say that out loud.

"There are so many experienced managers in the Premier League who will be thinking that, and I’ve thought that, but they won’t say it.

“The worst comment for me was after the Grimsby game, where he said that the players spoke out loud – I thought that was a little bit damning for him." (Daily Sun)
