A festive gathering at the annual August Meeting in Ugwunagbo, Abia State, ended in tragedy on Monday, August 18, 2025, as popular entertainer, Mrs. Nwandinma Dickson, known widely as “Nwanyi Garri,” suddenly slumped and died in the middle of a performance. This was according to the news portal, People of Abia (peopleofabia.com), which said that the event was organized by the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti.

The event, according to the portal, attracted women leaders, community stakeholders, and guests from across the state.

As per People of Abia:

Mrs. Dickson, a 65-year-old native of Oza Umuebukwu in Nneji Autonomous Community, Ugwunagbo LGA, was billed to entertain attendees with dance and drama, a role she had performed for years at local gatherings.

Eyewitnesses say she was full of energy as she moved around different canopies, greeting guests and thrilling the audience with her lively theatrics. But in the middle of her performance, she stopped briefly, then slumped to the ground. Many in the crowd initially thought it was part of her act, only to realize minutes later that she was not responding.

The Mayor of Ugwunagbo Local Government Area rushed her to the hospital in his vehicle, but medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival.

Family sources revealed that Mrs. Dickson had earlier expressed reluctance to attend the August Meeting, but eventually changed her mind to honor her commitment. Her sudden death has left residents of Ugwunagbo and the wider Abia community in deep mourning.

Known for her spirited performances and cultural contributions, “Nwayi Garri” was more than just an entertainer. She symbolized resilience and community pride, using art to bring joy to many. Her passing has cast a shadow over this year’s August Meeting, an event traditionally meant to foster unity, development, and cultural celebration among Igbo women.
