How I survived ‘spiritual attack’ — 9ice

Nigerian singer Alexander Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has opened up about a life-threatening ‘spiritual attack’ that left him vomiting blood for six months.

The ‘Gongo Aso’ hitmaker revealed this during a recent episode of The Nancy Isime Show, which aired on Saturday, recounting a terrifying chapter in his life that he said defied medical explanation.

Asked by Isime if he had faced spiritual battles during his music career, 9ice responded without hesitation: “Several times.” But one incident, he recalled, nearly cost him his life.

“When I was vomiting blood for about six months in my own house. I had to leave my house. It happened in 2009/2010. It wasn’t a medical condition,” he said, adding that conventional methods had failed to diagnose or treat the affliction.

According to the singer, his turning point came when someone referred him to Ifa, a traditional Yoruba spiritual system, which he credits for his recovery.

“I’m not a Christian or a Muslim, I’m a Babalawo. I’m an African. I’m a traditionalist. The first time I experienced Ifa was when I was vomiting blood. I just wish that I had known Ifa at the beginning,” 9ice stated.

Reflecting on his spiritual awakening, he referenced Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

“Fela used to go to Ogun, and people were mocking him, but now, I understand,” he said.

Known for his deep Yoruba lyrics and use of proverbs, 9ice has long celebrated African culture in his music. But now, he’s extending that passion into personal belief.

He called on Africans to reconnect with their roots by embracing traditional religions, saying they offer a sense of identity, protection, and healing that modern systems often overlook.

9ice, who rose to stardom in the late 2000s with chart-topping hits and multiple awards, has since remained a vocal advocate for indigenous values, both in lyrics and lifestyle. (Sunday Tribune)
