The Katsina State Police Command has foiled two separate kidnap attempts in Sabuwa Local Government Area of the state, rescuing a total of 28 victims.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, revealed that the first incident occurred on Tuesday at about 9:24 am, when a distress call was received from a good Samaritan, reporting that suspected bandits armed with dangerous weapons had blocked the Sabuwa–Kaya Road at Inno Junction and abducted 14 individuals.
“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Sabuwa swiftly mobilised operatives to the scene. A gun duel ensued, but the hoodlums were forced to flee due to the superior firepower and tactical response of the police,” he said.
All 14 victims were rescued unhurt. However, the bandits shot and killed one Abba, a 27-year-old man from Funtua town in Funtua LGA.
According to the spokesperson, the efforts form part of ongoing intensified operations against kidnapping and banditry across the state.
In a related development, at about 11:27 pm on Sunday, 28 July, another distress call alerted police that armed bandits had attacked Zagaizagi village in Sabuwa LGA, abducting several residents.
Again, the DPO led a rapid response team that engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, successfully foiling the kidnap attempt and rescuing another 14 victims. Two rustled cows were also recovered during the operation.
Regrettably, two individuals were killed by the bandits during the attack.
Sadiq stated that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Commending the officers for their bravery, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu, urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and accurate information to aid swift response to criminal activities.
“He further reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state,” the statement read.
