Senate President Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has promised that the leadership of the National Assembly will do everything in its power to end the spate of sectarian killings in Plateau State.
The Senate President, speaking at the funeral service of Prof Janet Plang, wife of Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central, at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) headquarters in Jos on Friday, July 25, expressed regret that despite all efforts, the killings in Plateau have continued unabated.
Akpabio, responding to the plea of Plateau State Governor, Barr Caleb Mutfwang, for urgent federal response to the murder of innocent indigenes by terrorists, said, “As the President of the 10th Senate, I hear you loud and clear, and be rest assured that your travails will be given the needed attention and response from the relevant agencies, and the Egyptians you see today, you shall see them no more.”
“Let me, on behalf of my distinguished colleagues, condole with your government and the people of Plateau State on this needless and unwarranted loss of lives. I assure you that your message will be delivered to President Bola Tinubu, and something will be done very urgently to protect the lives and property of the people living in this state,” he added.[](https://blueprint.ng/plateau-end-to-needless-killings-in-sight-akpabio/)[](https://www.thecable.ng/senate-will-work-with-fg-to-end-plateau-attacks-says-akpabio/)[](https://politicsnigeria.com/senate-will-work-with-fg-to-end-plateau-attacks-akpabio/)
He also donated N50 million to the church.
In his condolence message, the Senate President described the late Prof Janet Plang as a “quintessential woman and mother, who loved humanity and did all within her powers to inculcate the same in the lives of our children.
“On behalf of the 10th Senate, I pray for the repose of her soul and may God grant the father, husband, and children, as well as those who knew her while she was here with us, the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss in Jesus’ name.”
Governor Mutfwang, speaking earlier, berated those who described the killings as a result of farmers/herders clashes. Referring to recent attacks where 14 people returning from a market in Bokkos were gruesomely murdered, Mutfwang said, “It pains my heart when people say it’s farmers/herders clashes. How do you kill a three-year-old child? For what? And then somebody comes to tell me it was a reprisal attack. For what? I would beg the Senate of the Republic to help us.
“In my position, I cannot be irresponsible to despise the efforts of the security agencies. That is why I said last Wednesday when I visited, that I cannot ask that the baby be thrown out with the bathwater.
“But the truth is, there are good soldiers and bad soldiers. Let the truth be told. And that is why we need voices, the right voices, speaking in the right places.
“I’ve been vilified for trying to cast aspersions on the security agencies. Where they have done well, they know I have praised them. Where some of their men have betrayed them, we have also said, look into your men.
“I never asked that soldiers should leave Plateau State. But the people themselves cried out. But I said, no, we must find a way to re-motivate our security agencies so that they can do their job better.”
He described the deceased as an illustrious daughter of Plateau, a professor in her own right, the daughter of a professor who had demonstrated her own intellectual capacity.
“And just when we thought she would begin to earn her place of leadership in the state, it pleased God to take her away. But we are comforted in the fact that she knew she was going, and she knew where she was going.”
Delivering his sermon, Rev Dr Pofi, who spoke on the theme “Living with Eternity in View,” reminded the congregation that “death is our common denominator.”
He urged the deceased’s family to take solace in God Almighty, who is the giver and taker of life, whose authority cannot be questioned by anybody.
The remains of Prof Janet Plang were later laid to rest in Takkas Village, Pankshin Local Government Area. (Saturday Sun)
