A lightning strike during a heavy downpour on Saturday claimed the lives of 32 cows in Osara village, Obantoko, Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The incident occurred around 2pm, as the cows, sheltered by Fulani herders from the storm, were struck and killed in their sheds.
The tragedy was said to have left the herders in shock and sorrow.
It was gathered that they reported the incident to the village head, Baale Wasiu Afolabi, who confirmed the development.
Afolabi stated that the herders discovered the lifeless animals after the storm and immediately notified him.
He added that a meeting has been scheduled with the affected herders to discuss preventive measures and ensure that such occurrences do not disrupt the peace in the community.
“On Saturday, the Fulani herders came to me at home to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows.
“I followed them to their place and saw the dead cows and we’ve reported it to the Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr Afolashade Adeyemo,” Afolabi said.
However, Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, in a message to journalists concerning the incident, stated that the matter had been reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Aregbe Division on Saturday, stressing that operatives were quickly dispatched to the area. (The Nation)
