Porsha Williams and Simon Guobadia
The United States of America has deported Simon Guobadia, the estranged husband of The Real Housewives Of Atlanta star, Porsha Williams, to Nigeria.
Guobadia, a businessman who lived in the US for over 40 years, was deported following his detention at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.
His deportation came amid President Donald Trump’s order for massive deportations of illegal migrants, which he signed earlier this year.
US DailyMail confirmed Tuesday that Guobadia was released from ICE custody and sent back to Nigeria.
According to the DailyMail, Guobadia was arrested by officials of the ICE in February when he travelled to the US to attend a hearing related to his ongoing divorce from Williams.
Guobadia, who immigrated from Nigeria to the US in 1982, allegedly overstayed his visa and was declared deportable in 1985.
He subsequently returned to the US in 1986 and again overstayed his visa.
Guobadia married his first wife, an American citizen named Karron English, in 1985 after his first deportation in 1982.
He then applied for “Adjustment of Status” in 1985, but was denied citizenship because the government believed the marriage to be a sham after his ex-wife told the Immigration and Naturalisation Service that they never lived together or consummated their marriage.
The 61-year-old Nigerian left the country voluntarily, but he re-entered the US again in 1986 on another visitor’s visa.
However, he overstayed his six-month visa again.
Guobadia married Porsha in November 2022 after getting engaged in May 2021.
Before then, he married Falynn Pina, a former Real Housewives star.
In February Porsha announced the end of her marriage to Guobadia and later filed for divorce.
Guobadia blamed Porsha’s “misrepresentations” about leaving RHOA, on why he agreed to the prenup.
Guobadia made his debut on RHOA at the conclusion of Season 13, introduced as the husband of Falynn Pina.
However, the pair went their separate ways after the conclusion of filming.
Fraud allegations
Guobadia was arrested in 1987 for bank and credit card fraud, and pled guilty to all the felony charges.
In 1989, Guobadia was arrested again, but for unauthorised use of a vehicle, and in 1990 for fraud.
In 1991, he was accused of committing credit card fraud, and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service started deporting proceedings against him.
Guobadia was forcibly removed from the US in 1992 by a judge’s order.
According to Yahoo News, Guobadia applied for temporary resident status under a special Immigration programme, called Special Agricultural Worker using a fake identity.
The programme allowed him to get a green card in 1992.
In 1993, Guobadia bagged BBA in accounting from the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC and founded SIMCOL Petroleum Limited Company, a regional fuel supplier, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia in 2010.
He also opened Simon’s Restaurant in September 2017 in Midtown, Atlanta, but the restaurant shut down in May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Arrest and deportation
According to a report by DailyMail, Guobadia was arrested and taken into custody by ICE agents after arriving in the US in February.
The Nigerian businessman was then taken to the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, where he spent three months before he was released and sent home to Nigeria.
“It was very emotional for me because prior to that, I didn’t have a phone call. I didn’t have a chance to phone them. I didn’t have my phone book. I guess the kindness, or I don’t know what it was, but the officer let me use this phone and I was able to get through to my house manager and she in turn got in touch with [my close friend],” he said.
Guobadia said he was working to reunite with his children and intends to travel to Dubai, having lived there in the past.
Guobadia’s deportation was confirmed by his friend and business partner, Tai Savet, who said that the Nigeria-born businessman was sent on a flight home a few days ago.
Savet told Us Weekly that Guobadia was in “good spirits” after a tough experience at the detention centre, which was the first time he had ever been behind bars.
When contacted to confirm Guobadia’s deportation, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abdulrahman Balogun, said he was not aware of the development.
Similarly, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service, Akinsola Akinlabi, told our correspondent that he would make inquiries and revert.
However, he had yet to respond as of the time of filing this report. (Sunday PUNCH)
