Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai, has warned officers and marshals of the Kaduna State Traffic and Environment Law Enforcement Agency (KASTELEA) against using their position to oppress the public.
The Governor gave the warning in Kaduna shortly after last weekend’s public enlightenment Road Walk and lecture organised in collaboration with the NUJ, ICPC, NURTW and PMAN.
Represented by the General Manager, GM, KASTELEA, Colonel Zubairu Ahmed Yerima (rtd.), the Governor also waned the Marshals not to use their uniform to witch-hunt anybody while
discharging their duties.
He advised them to work for the interest of safety of Kaduna road users and environment.
Also speaking, the representative of Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Mr. Godwin Basheren, warned the officers and the marshals of KASTELEA to resist any temptation, saying: “Some temptation may come to your ways but resist it.”
He urged them to fully study the law and the penalties of KASTELEA for them to be able to discharge their duties effectively.
“Corruption is the number one problem in this country. I am calling on you to shun gratification,” he added.
In his address, Comrade Garba Muhammad, NUJ Kaduna Council Chairman, commended Governor El-Rufai’s administration for its foresight in establishing KASTELEA, saying: “We believe this will go a long way in complementing FRSC and other agencies in ensuring safer roads and environment.
“NUJ is very ready to contribute its quota in the development of the state and Nigeria as a whole in the actualisation of the present administration’s change agenda.”
He reiterated that the council leadership places priority on training and retraining of its members, as a way of encouraging productivity and objective reporting at all times.
“We appreciate Governor El-Rufai’s administration for sponsoring the capacity training workshop for 30 journalists on effective use of ICT and reporting and 50 journalists on reporting health issues,” the NUJ State Chairman added.
He also appreciated the chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dialogue Computers Institute, Dr. Mahdi Shehu, for agreeing to conduct a free training for 40 NUJ members on ICT/entrepreneurship.
“We appreciated the Management of KRPC for sustaining the sponsorship of training and retraining programme of our members on energy reporting,” the Chairman said.
A lecture was also held at NUJ Kaduna Council with theme “Overcoming the Corrupt Temptations at the Course of Action”.
Other associations and agencies that participated at the event included the FRSC, ICPC, Womenhood Foundation of Nigeria, YDMRI, NIGAS Skills Accusation Centre, Sky Skaters Kaduna Association, MISMA Concept Media, Association of Kaduna Deejays and PMAN.
